Maths for kids – fun active learning activities

Looking for fun math for kids’ activities to keep your child’s skills sharp?
Sure, you could buy flashcards and summer math worksheets, but active learning activities are much more likely to make tricky math concepts stick.

What is active learning?

Reading, worksheets and tests are not likely to go down well at a time when your child really wants to forget about school. Expect tears, tantrums and lots of moaning.

What you need are hands-on activities, which allow your child to practice by doing and learn through critical discussions, whilst having fun at the same time. In short, you want to engage their brains without them knowing! When you want to commit math skills to long-term memory, active learning is not only loads more fun, but also much more effective.

Rather than nagging your child to complete a certain number of workbook pages each week, he or she won’t feel like learning with active math for kids’ projects. He or she may even nag you to do more!

Maths for kids at home

With a bit of creativity, you can introduce some active learning at home. Cooking is a great way to boost math skills. Select a recipe together. Practice measurements and fractions to demonstrate applied mathematics. Explain how ingredients react to show chemistry in real life. Calculate temperatures and cooking times, and then enjoy the tasty results.

Gardening is another hands-on project kids love. Whether you have space for a full garden or just a few containers on a patio, let your child choose an appropriate vegetable or flower and get their hands dirty. Then chat to them about biology and plant photosynthesis. Tracking the temperature, watering schedule and growth chart boosts math and science skills. Watering the plants regularly also helps to teach your child responsibility

Math for kids

How to keep your child’s maths strong during the summer.

Our holiday camps in Switzerland – Geneva, Saint-Sulpice and Martigny, are another great example of active learning activities, where your child will get to learn and expand science, technology, engineering and maths concepts (STEM) through hands-on model building.

Our workshop themes range from pirates and dinosaurs to robotics and space adventures and are led by trained instructors who will guide the children and will lead educational and interactive discussions around these fun themes.

Whatever learning you choose, be sure to go beyond the worksheet to explore some active learning opportunities.
